Before you send money for a used car from China, verify four things in writing: the exact vehicle, the seller’s authority to sell it, the commercial terms, and the documents that will be produced before shipment. This does not remove every risk, but it makes misunderstandings visible before a payment becomes difficult to unwind.
For an overseas buyer, the safest approach is a documented sequence rather than a promise in a chat. LEO EV CAR can coordinate China-side vehicle sourcing, inspection, export paperwork, inland delivery and handover at the port. Import customs clearance, duties, certification, registration and delivery after arrival normally remain the buyer’s or local agent’s responsibility.
1. Lock the identity of the vehicle first
A listing title and a group of photos are not enough. Ask for the VIN (or chassis number where applicable), make, model, trim, model year, colour, mileage shown on the odometer, powertrain and the current location. The proforma invoice and inspection request should use the same identifiers.
- Compare the VIN in the vehicle photos, registration material and seller’s written offer.
- Ask which items are included: charging cable, spare key, tools, tyres, manuals and any stated accessories.
- For an EV or plug-in hybrid, record the battery type, rated range standard shown by the manufacturer, charging-port configuration and any visible warning lights. Do not treat a claimed range as a guaranteed delivered range.
- Ask for fresh, date-stamped exterior, interior, underbody and start-up video, especially when the car is stored far from the seller’s office.
Before purchase, use a structured inspection rather than relying only on photos. See our used-car inspection checklist before export for the condition points that should be recorded. Where appropriate, LEO EV CAR can arrange or commission a Chaboshi inspection; the available inspection scope and report items depend on the specific vehicle.
2. Confirm who is actually selling the car
There can be a dealer, a source owner, a broker, an export service company and a port-forwarding company in the same transaction. That can be normal, but their roles must be clear. Ask the contracting company to identify who owns or controls the vehicle, who issues the invoice, who receives the payment and who is responsible for each China-side step.
Checks worth doing before a deposit
- Obtain the legal company name, unified social credit code or registration details, registered address and a business contact who can confirm the quotation.
- Make sure the bank-account beneficiary matches the company named in the contract. A different beneficiary needs a written explanation and buyer approval before payment.
- Request a quotation with a validity date and a clear breakdown of vehicle price, China-side service scope, inland transport if included, port charges if included, and ocean freight treatment.
- Ask whether the car is already in stock, reserved from a partner channel, or still subject to final availability. A price is not proof of stock.
Do not assume that a Chinese domestic sale and an export transaction use the same documents or party names. The buyer should be able to follow the chain from the inspected vehicle to the company on the contract and the account receiving funds.
3. Turn the quotation into a payment-controlled agreement
Agree on milestones before transferring funds. The right milestones vary by deal size, vehicle type and relationship, but they should link each payment to an observable event. For example, a buyer may require vehicle/VIN confirmation before a deposit, an inspection result before the balance, and a copy of the final shipping instruction or bill of lading after loading. A bill of lading is a shipping document, not a substitute for checking the vehicle before payment.
The agreement should state the currency, bank charges, payment deadline, refund or replacement treatment if the confirmed vehicle is unavailable, and what happens when inspection reveals material differences from the agreed description. Avoid vague wording such as “full service included” without a list of services and exclusions.
| Item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Vehicle price | VIN-linked vehicle, currency, included accessories and taxes/charges stated separately where relevant. |
| China-side scope | Inspection, export paperwork, inland transport and port handover: included, optional or excluded. |
| Sea freight | Whether it is quoted, estimated or paid separately; route and carrier space remain subject to actual booking. |
| Destination costs | Customs, duty, certification, registration, demurrage, local transport and insurance should be checked with the buyer’s local agent. |
4. Review the document trail before the car reaches the port
Document names and requirements differ by destination and shipment method. Typical transaction records can include the signed sales contract, proforma or commercial invoice, packing or equipment list where relevant, inspection records, export declaration materials and transport documents. Your importer or customs broker should confirm exactly what the destination country requires before the vehicle is purchased.
LEO EV CAR can prepare and coordinate the China-side export documentation within the agreed scope. We do not represent that a vehicle will automatically satisfy destination-country certification, homologation, tax or registration rules. Checking those rules early is particularly important for EVs, right-hand-drive versus left-hand-drive markets, and countries with age or emissions restrictions.
5. Keep one written deal file
Store the quote, contract, VIN photos, inspection report, payment receipt, change approvals and document copies in one folder. If someone changes the price, vehicle, bank account, port or delivery responsibility, ask for an updated written document. This simple discipline is often more valuable than trying to resolve conflicting chat messages later.
Send us the details for a verifiable quotation
Send LEO EV CAR the target make/model, new or used condition, destination port/country, quantity, preferred shipping method and whether you already have an import agent. We will confirm the China-side sourcing and inspection route, the documents we can coordinate, and which costs need a live quote. Start with our China car export process guide and export cost breakdown for context.
